Horses, on the whole, are gentle non-confrontational creatures, which will put up with a lot before really complaining, and, when they do complain, run the risk of being dismissed as difficult and suffering from behavioral problems. They will, in some cases, be subjected to brute force to resolve what is deemed to be a naughty habit, and as a result soldier on in silence. We have all seen the patches of white hair which is scarring indicative of badly fitting saddles or rugs. The soft tissue damage occurred long before the scarring became visible – how might the horse have tried to communicate its discomfort to its owner? Ears pinned back during saddling, a reluctance to work correctly, bucking, napping, the list is endless. Horses have no way to express pain apart from behaving in an undesirable fashion to get our attention. The next time your horse plays up don’t be too quick to reprimand, try to see if you can figure out what’s prompted the outburst. |
